Every year, Fortune magazine publishes a list of the best places to work in the U.S. Google claimed this year’s top spot and is known for high salaries and great perks. But number two on this year’s list is a little harder to guess.
It’s Wegmans Food Markets, a family-owned, regional supermarket chain that’s based in Rochester, New York.
Here are just a few of the comments from employees of this progressive and successful company.
“Management is honest and ethical in its business practices”; “great atmosphere”; “rewards programs provide praise, thanks, and recognition”; they “put employees’ ideas into action”; “flexible work schedules”; “we’re given the resources and equipment to do our jobs”, “provides management trainee and leadership development programs, department universities, workshops, and certification programs”.
Wegmans offers health insurance for qualifying part-time employees, 100 percent company-paid health coverage for dependents (for full-time employees), and fairly generous paid-time-off benefits. Additionally, employees like how the company contributes to the community.
Notice that none of these included compensation, in fact most employees make less than $11 per hour (very similar to the fitness industry). If you’re serious about keeping good people around, its time to take a look at your company culture and human resource policies.
